There are several overarching philosophies/beliefs that guide the work of the Ohio Department of Mental Health (ODMH).

Nurturing resiliency helps children, youth and families successfully meet life’s challenges. A focus on quality and continuous improvement is key to achieving an effective, person-centered mental health system. From evidenced-based practices and our quality agenda to strategic planning and system finance reform, ODMH strives to support initiatives and practices of the highest quality. In the area of clinical quality, we support a systematic approach to facilitating recovery through the use of clinical best practices, quality improvement tools and outcomes measurement.
Integration of physical and behavioral health services can reduce disability and early loss of life of people with mental illness. ODMH supports adoption of integrated health care service delivery approaches by offering technical assistance, funding health integration projects, conducting research and participating in statewide initiatives to set policy. The department's designated Office of Health Integration is leading diverse efforts, including implementation of community behavioral health center health homes for individuals with Serious and Persistent Mental Illness.
