Residency and Traineeship Program Introduction

The Ohio Department of Mental Health (ODMH) Residency and Training Program  funds the training of mental health professionals, including psychiatric residents and students of psychology, nurses, social workers and others to serve adults and children in Ohio's public mental health system. This program supports the ODMH Clinical Quality Agenda by promoting the evolution of a workforce that possesses the knowledge, skills and abilities to provide high quality services and high-performance leadership. This is a critical element in the continuing development of community systems of care throughout Ohio.

The ODMH Residency and Training Program recruits and retains highly qualified mental health professionals and promotes linkages to local systems and stakeholders. Exposure to community mental health settings early in a student's educational process impacts future career development and employment decisions. Local systems and organizations also benefit by the linkages created between educational institutions and mental health agencies, boards, advocacy groups and other organizations.

Residency and Training Program grant funds are used primarily to support faculty in providing training relevant to public mental health. There is an expectation that applicants will obtain collaborative financial support by engaging community stakeholders and others (e.g., supplemental salary from boards and community agencies and/or grants from public and private foundations). Priority is given to applicants who seek to develop self-sustaining and enduring programs within their colleges and universities.

Recently, the Office of Clinical Best Practices has assumed responsibility for the federal Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA) program for mental health service providers in Ohio. Applicants are encouraged to consider opportunities available through HPSA to provide support and assistance to trainees that pursue practicum experiences and employment opportunities in underserved communities (see HPSA program documents online).
